Rouge Royale is an old-fashioned-looking red rose that grows like a modern one. Deep burgundy buds open into large, bright raspberry-red blooms, 10–13 cm (4–5") across, packed with 75–100 petals in a full, quartered form. The fragrance is strong and sweet, with berry and citrus notes. Bred in France by Jacques Mouchotte for Meilland and first introduced in 2005, this hybrid tea grows as an upright, bushy shrub of about 120–150 cm tall and 60–90 cm wide. That’s enough height to stand at the back of a bed or form a low hedge. It repeats in flushes from late spring into fall and has a good reputation for healthy foliage. Plant it in full sun. It is hardy to about zone 6, so in colder parts of Canada mound soil or mulch over the base for winter.
A full, fragrant red rose for anyone who wants the old-rose look on a modern, repeat-flowering plant.
