Lady of Shalott is a David Austin English rose introduced in 2009 and named after Tennyson's poem, to mark the 200th anniversary of his birth. Rich orange-red buds open into chalice-shaped blooms of about 60 loosely arranged orange petals, wrapped in outer petals of salmon-pink with golden-yellow undersides. The fragrance is a warm Tea scent with hints of spiced apple and cloves. It's a good cutting rose and repeats from late spring into fall. The open, loosely petalled blooms also draw bees. It quickly grows into a large, bushy shrub of about 1.5 m tall and 1.2 m wide, with slightly arching stems and mid-green leaves that come in with a bronze tint. It's adaptable: it grows in any soil type, handles partial shade and even north-facing spots, and is rated hardy to zone 4. It suits a border or a hedge, and it can also be trained as a climber.
A hardy orange English rose that copes with shade and attracts bees.
