Dainty Bess was bred in England in 1925 by William Archer and named for his wife, Elizabeth. It's a hybrid tea, but the flowers are single, nothing like the classic high-centred hybrid tea. Each bloom is 8–10 cm across, with five ruffled, shell-pink petals around a cluster of deep maroon stamens, which is what makes it look so distinctive. The flowers come in loose clusters on long stems and repeat almost constantly through the season. The scent is light to medium, wild-rose and slightly spicy. Because the flowers are open and single, bees and butterflies visit them freely, and if you skip deadheading late in the season it sets red hips. It's a tough, hardy plant, rated to zone 4 by some growers and zone 5 by others. It grows upright to about 80–120 cm with leathery foliage.

A 1920s single hybrid tea that bees love.
